Working with Fehu: Understanding Energetic Cycles
Current Themes of the Rune Fehu

The Elder Futhark runes offer profound wisdom, guidance, and insight that remain relevant in our modern lives. Today, I want to explore Fehu (ᚠ), the first rune in the Elder Futhark sequence, or the last depending on the rune magician you ask, and what its energy is revealing to us in this moment (March of 2025).
The Cycle of Endings and Beginnings
Fehu, traditionally associated with cattle, mobile wealth, and prosperity, is currently highlighting the importance of recognizing endings and beginnings in our lives. As the first rune in the Futhark (and the last in the Uthark), Fehu itself represents both an ending and a beginning - the completion of one cycle and the start of another.
Right now, Fehu encourages us to be energetically aware of these transitions. What chapters are closing in your life? What new opportunities are emerging? By consciously acknowledging these shifts, we can honor the natural cycles that govern our lives rather than resisting them.
Reminder 1: Mindful Energetic Exchanges
The second message Fehu brings forth is the need to be attentive to the energetic interactions and exchanges that fill our days. Every relationship, conversation, and transaction involves an exchange of energy. Fehu asks us to examine:
- Are your energetic exchanges balanced?
- How is your energy being depleted? How is it being replenished?
- Where might you be giving too much without receiving?
- Where might you be taking without offering fair value in return?
By becoming conscious of these dynamics, we can create healthier patterns of exchange in all areas of our lives, thus allowing us to stay in energetic balance.

Reminder 2: Wealth as Energy in Motion
Fehu's traditional association with wealth reminds us that money is, at its core, simply a tool - a manifestation of energy. In our material world, financial resources represent potential energy that can be directed toward our goals and values.
When we view money through this lens, we can develop a healthier relationship with it. Rather than seeing wealth as an end in itself, we recognize it as flowing energy that should be mindfully channeled (and with this comes a certain level of responsibility, yes?). Like any form of energy, it can be creative or destructive depending on how we use it. (And yes, I say all this bearing our current economic "health" in mind - all the more reason to say it.)
Reminder 3: Honoring Transitions Through Energetic Closure
Finally, Fehu is currently reminding us about the importance of giving proper energetic closure to the endings and beginnings we experience. Without conscious closure, old patterns and attachments can linger, draining our energy and preventing us from fully embracing new opportunities.
This might involve:
- Creating (small or big) personal rituals to mark significant transitions
- Expressing gratitude for what has ended
- Setting clear intentions for new beginnings
- Releasing emotional attachments to completed chapters and those associated with them
By providing this energetic closure, we free ourselves to move forward with clarity and purpose.
Working with Fehu
If Fehu's current messages resonate with you, consider these practices to work more deeply with its energy:
- Intentionally meditate with Fehu
- Journal about the endings and beginnings currently present in your life
- Examine your relationship with material resources
- Create a small ritual to honor a recent ending or beginning
Remember that the runes are not just symbols but living energies (with their own frequencies) that continue to offer wisdom to those willing to listen. When we tune into them, we develop a deeper understanding of their energies, but we also learn more about ourselves. May Fehu's guidance help you navigate life's transitions with greater awareness and intention.
